It feels a bit random even though the colours are nice. I have mixed feelings about the UK hardcover. I guess it was a cover before its time as this kind of mysterious, symbolic illustration is now all the rage. WHY IS KAROU BLUE? IS SHE AN ALIEN? (Maybe the cover person misread the fact that she has blue hair?)Īnd then we have the UK ARC and can I just say I wish this was the cover they went with for the final version? What is this beauty? Something erotic, written in the early 90s.īut then I think this cover is even worse! This was for the US advance review copy (ARC), so thankfully not many people would have had this intro to the book. This was the US cover, and I have to admit I am not a fan at all. So it was fascinating to see the variations, not only in image concept but in title! See the full video from Laini’s feed at the bottom. I absolutely loved this book – it was one of my top reads of 2019. James insisted that writers in Great Britain and America should be allowed the greatest freedom possible in presenting their view of the world, as French authors were. His method of writing from the point of view of a character within a tale allowed him to explore the phenomena of consciousness and perception, and his style in later works has been compared to impressionist painting. His plots centered on personal relationships, the proper exercise of power in such relationships, and other moral questions. He is primarily known for a series of major novels in which he portrayed the encounter of America with Europe. He spent much of his life in England and became a British subject shortly before his death. Here we must pivot, briefly, into a proper understanding of political philosophy. But this theme of civil society being premised on the rule of force is also a theme that he highlights in Social Contract – it is the bedrock of how Rousseau understands liberalism. Rather, civil society is the product of force and coercion, primarily as it relates to property as the second discourse goes on ad nauseam explaining. The second discourse begins with Rousseau’s secular depiction of the fall of man, “The first man who, having enclosed a piece of land, though of saying ‘this is mine’ and found people simple enough to believe him, was the true founder of civil society.” For Rousseau, civil society is not founded on a social compact in the manner by which Hobbes, Locke, and Spinoza described it. The second discourse is Rousseau’s telling of the story of the enslavement of man, which was the task before him in explaining the origins of inequality which his discourses set out to achieve. The second discourse contains his famous depiction of the noble savage, how man loses his freedom and equality through the establishment of property and society, and his ruminations about how reason corrupts human living and how knowledge is used as a tool of oppression and violence. Rousseau’s second discourse on inequality builds from his first. Suddenly, they hear the eerie knocks on their door. She couldn’t have been more generous in her praise and her enthusiasm for what we had done. I was most nervous about whether Miriam would like it, and she loved the film. In the process of me finding my way through it, I talked to Miriam about it throughout-she had read the script and talked with all the actors and the heads of departments (on the production). I was almost ready to give up because I simply couldn’t crack it. I thought that the adaptation would be fairly easy but that turned out not to be the case for various reasons. Once you start going down that route, you have to leave (those concerns) behind. I’d never seen suicide-the desire for suicide-written about in this way, and the fact that it was from Miriam’s lived experience made it something of a trifecta of wanting to go forward and trying to adapt it.ĭawson: Did you have trepidation over adapting such a beloved book because, obviously, some parts have to be left out and other things have to change to make the story more cinematic? So, I thought this would allow us to cast above our weight in casting because of the roles that were in this book. You often hear that it’s harder for actresses, once they reach a certain age, to get good parts. It certainly has three incredible, cast-able roles. My wife, who also had read it, said to me that she thought it would make a great film. Michael McGowan: I’m a fan of Miriam’s (the author) and I’d read some of her other stuff.
